Abacavir‐induced functional response of CD8 T cells

Microbiology and Immunology· 2019· 4 citations

A functional immunology study characterizing HLA-B*57:01-restricted CD8 T-cell proliferation, cytokine release, and degranulation in abacavir-sensitive HIV-1 patients.

This study compared abacavir-specific CD8 T-cell functions in HLA-B57:01–positive hypersensitive and HLA-B57:01–negative tolerant HIV-1 patients. Using cytokine, degranulation, and proliferation assays, we demonstrated that only HLA-B*57:01–positive hypersensitive individuals generated strong multifunctional CD8 T-cell responses, dominated by cytolytic degranulation, confirming a highly allele-restricted mechanism of abacavir hypersensitivity.
